Exploring Norway
A Journey of Fjords, Saunas, and Nobel Peace

Oslo, the vibrant capital of Norway, is a city that seamlessly blends modern-day city life with natural beauty.
From invigorating floating saunas followed by a dip in the Fjord, amazing architecture, shops from Dior to Zara, and the home of the Nobel Peace Prize Centre, Oslo offers a unique experience for every traveler.
Oslo was just, WOW.
So I am going to share with you our trip to Oslo in January 2024.
We arrived at Sanjeford airport and followed the signs to look for the transfer bus that would take us into Oslo City. This bus was packed with locals and tourists alike. The journey took around 1 hour and 30 minutes and stopped along the way at several towns.
The scenery on this bus ride was a mixture of open roads and towns and with the sun going down, it gave way to some fantastic photos.
We eventually arrived at the bus terminal in Oslo and looked for where the connection to our hotel was. After chatting with Tourist Information, the representative suggested that we walk as it was on for about 10-15 mins.
I’m so glad we walked as we went through the centre of the city and as it was just going dark, it was all lit up and pretty.
After a good night's sleep, we had breakfast and headed out to the foreshore to see where we needed to go for our sauna later and trip up the Fjord on Sunday.
We then headed into town to see the architecture and the palace.
Norway, like the UK, has a King and Queen. King Harald and Queen Sonja, pictured with their family and heirs to the throne.
Sauna with a difference
After a good mooch around the centre we then headed back to the hotel for a quick nap and to get ready with swim stuff for the sauna. I was so excited for this as I love the feeling of a cold water dip and to dip in a Fjord was special as it's a Refreshing Norwegian Tradition.
We were joined in the sauna by 3 other couples. A couple from Germany but who were English, a Norwegian couple, and two others.
My hubby was the first to go for a full dip. He went straight in and felt invigorated when we came out.
However, after two attempts, I only managed up to my waist and chickened out because my feet were shocked by the cold. It was an amazing experience that will stay with me forever.
Fjord trip
A visit to Oslo would be incomplete without a boat trip on the Oslo Fjord. And OMG it did not disappoint. The boat took a while to leave and as we left the dock we could hear the crack of the ice just like a scene from Titanic but fortunately, the captain had it all under control.
The weather was just perfect with clear skies to see across the fjord and all the little towns and sights along the way.
It was just magical and worth every penny spent on the trip. Two guides on the boat shared stories along the way about the old city and the new. The best story was about the bathing huts which were made so Norwegians could swim naked but not be seen by others.
All our photos just don't share the magic that is Oslo. I could have just stayed on the boat and gone out again.
Advocates for a Better World
After the boat trip, I dragged my hubby into the Nobel Peace Prize Centre: A Beacon of Inspiration Oslo is not only known for its natural wonders but also for its commitment to peace and diplomacy.
Located in the heart of the city, is a testament to this commitment.
There were three main exhibitions. Iranian Nages Mohammadi and her fight against the oppression of women and promote human rights in Iran, Yoko Ono and her vision for Art and a digital display of past winners of the Peace Prize.
I found the Centre inspirational, moving, and a place of reflection. I could have stayed in there for hours but knew hubby was getting bored.
Conclusion:
Oslo, the capital of Norway, is a city that captivates the soul with its unique blend of natural beauty and cultural richness. From the relaxing and refreshing fjord dip to the enchanting boat trips on the Oslo Fjord and the inspiring Nobel Peace Prize Centre, every experience in Oslo is an adventure you must try.
