Does that voice in your head ( aka The CHIMP🐒’) rob you of ‘happiness’?
Happiness is a pursuit we all share, yet its definition varies from person to person. The chattering voice in our heads, often referred to as 'The Chimp,' can sometimes steal our joy.
In this exploration of happiness, let's delve into what it means individually, the science behind it, and how we can cultivate it from within.
My Happy Place 🙂
I am at my happiest when I am outside connecting with nature and feeling free from stress. Going for a walk and listening to the birds sing with the fresh air against your cheeks.
Paddleboarding with the water gently splashing on the board and watching nature around me. 🏄
Or cycling along a country road taking in the sights and sounds.🚴
Sometimes it’s when I am alone, grateful for the peace. Other times happiness is sharing time with those you love.
The feeling of being free outside fills me with those endorphins that make me feel alive. And that might work for you too..
Dictionary definition 📖
‘Happiness is an emotional state—the feeling of being pleased’
But in reality, happiness is different for all of us. What it means to you might be different than what it means to me.
Happiness might be spending time with family.👪
Happiness might be seeing the best in everything.
Happiness might be connecting with nature
Happiness might be walking a mountain, a great gym session, or watching the sunset.
Just stop for a moment, close your eyes, and think about what makes you happy.
Celebrate it ( not with a glass of wine) but with a smile…🙂
Science of Happiness
Yes, there is science to happiness and the experts have been researching it for a long time. It’s an area of study that looks at what makes people happy and how we can have a more fulfilling life which I am sure is something we all crave.
So what does this mean? Let me try and explain…
Subjective Well-being
This is how we feel about our own life and how satisfied we are. Our emotions, and our sense of purpose. Understanding subjective well-being is crucial for us to explore our happiness...
How do we adapt to situations? Are we in a fight-or-flight situation? Is our glass half empty or half full?
Genetics - It’s in the genes…
Did you know research shows that 50% of our happiness can come from genetics?
The other 50% stems from your environment and influences, such as relationships, work, and activities.
Find your ‘WHY’
Finding true happiness takes investing in yourself and allowing yourself to experience it. It doesn't mean there won't be sad times, it just means you learn to ride the storm in the knowledge that your happiness will return. And that the ‘storm’ is an opportunity to learn.
To do this the experts recommend that we:
Practice gratitude and find things to be grateful for every day.
Help others with random acts of kindness
When you’re having a bad time, pause and think about the lessons you will learn
I am not saying any of this is easy and I am definitely not an expert but I am trying to learn, to reflect more, to pause and see what lesson I need to learn from it.
A positive mind = positive progress
Shouting affirmations at the mirror is a bit like that first sip of wine. It tastes good at first and seems to do the trick BUT only for a short time before the self-doubt (AKA the CHIMP) makes an appearance again.
A positive mindset is empowering and something I know I need to work on. What we tell ourselves we are, we then manifest.
I know I need to work on my mindset.
Maybe we can all benefit from looking at our mindset and remembering…
To believe in ourselves
To accept ourselves
To learn that criticism is not a personal attack
To forgive ourselves
To celebrate how far we have come
To heal from the inside
To love ourselves MORE…
But true happiness is not found in others. It’s not found through others…
IT’S FOUND WITHIN
So today as you think of the day ahead, remember to quiet that voice and be HAPPY.
